October Seventh - documentation, memory and testimony from October 7, 2023

On the morning of Simchat Torah, October 7, 2023, thousands of Hamas terrorists crossed the border. They murdered, raped and abducted hundreds of people. This is a record of what happened that day, and of the people who were there.

The Full Story - what happened on October 7

It did not happen all at once. At 6:29 in the morning a rocket barrage began, and minutes later there were already gunmen inside the communities. In those first hours nobody knew how large it was. Families sat in their safe rooms and waited, messages were sent and went unanswered, and in some places help came only after many hours. What is known today is gathered here: what happened in each community, when, and what the people there went through. Some of it is hard to read. We left it as it is.

From 6:29 in the morning until nightfall, all of it happened at once. The Nova festival in the Negev, dozens of communities, army bases overrun. The timeline puts it in order by the hour: when the first siren sounded, when each report came in, and when help reached each place. It is the only way to understand why it went on so long.

Before they were a list, they were people. One went out for a run that morning, one was getting the children ready, one drove to a party with friends. There is a page here for every one of them: what they were called, where they grew up, what they loved, and who they left behind. Some of the pages were written by the families themselves. As time passes it gets easier to speak about them in numbers and dates. This is the place where they go back to being names, faces and stories.
